Sisterlocks Vs Microlocs—How To Use Gel For Both

Sisterlocks Vs Microlocs—How To Use Gel For Both

@angelsabrinao

Microlocs and sisterlocs are the two main variations of dreadlocs for anyone who prefers to wear their locs in small sizes. At first glance, the two loc styles can look very similar- they're thinner than traditional dreads and can be easily styled into different hairstyles. However, the two loc variations are very different and both have their perks and downsides.

In this article, we’ll be discussing the major differences between sisterlocks and microlocs. Plus we'll be revealing our expert styling tips on how to use gel to keep your locs neat and tight.

What Are Microlocs

Microlocs are thin or smaller-sized versions of traditional locs that are often made by palm rolling, twisting, or braiding the hair. Although they can vary slightly in size, microlocs are usually no more than the size of a pencil in width. They also do not have a uniform pattern and as such they are very versatile and can be made in different patterns and widths.

Pros And Cons Of Microlocs

Pros

  • Microlocs can be started in a few different ways depending on your preference. You can start your locs using braids, twists, or palm-rolling your hair from roots to ends.

  • Microlocs can be done without the expertise of a stylist. You can easily create them on your own.

  • Microlocs are generally more affordable than sisterlocks.

Cons

  • Microlocs do not have a uniform grid pattern.

What Are Sisterlocks

Sisterlocks are a unique loc style that uses a special interlocking tool to create a symmetrical grid loc pattern. This loc style was created and trademarked by Dr JoAnne Cornwell in 1993 and has since become a popular choice with those who prefer locs that are very thin and easy to manipulate and style. Since they require a unique installation technique, sisterlocks are only done by certified sisterlocks experts.

Pros And Cons Of Sisterlocks

Pros

  • Sisterlocks have a neat and uniform grid loc pattern that makes them stand out.
  • Sisterlocks are installed by trained and certified sisterlocks experts so you are guaranteed to achieve your desired results.

Cons

  • Sisterlocks are more expensive than microlocs and can cost between $700-$1200 depending on your location.
  • Sisterlocks can only be started by locking your hair with an interlocking tool. You do not get the option of starting your locs with braids or twists.

Microlocs Vs Sisterlocks Which Is Right For You?

Both microlocs and sisterlocks have their unique perks and downsides so the perfect choice will depend on your personal preference and desired result. If you are particular about having an intricate and symmetrical grid pattern on your locs and don't mind paying a little more for the initial installation, then sisterlocks are the perfect option for you.

However, if you have a limited budget and want something slightly more affordable that does not require any particular expertise, go for micro locs. Microlocs are also the perfect option for those who want to DIY their locs or start their loc journey with braids or twists.

How To Maintain Your Locs With Gel

Whether you go for sisterlocks or microlocs, the key to maintaining them is to retighten them every six weeks. Doing this will keep your locs firm, and neat, and prevent them from breaking off.

Retightening your locs will require a strong hold gel like our Twist & Braid Gel that keeps your new growth in place until it matures. However, it is important to avoid using too much gel on your locs as that can leave you with a lot of build-up.

Here's how to do it properly

  1. Apply a little bit of our Twist & Braid Gel to the new growth at the root of your locs.
  2. Use your fingers to palm roll or twist the locs in a clockwise motion until your locs are tight.
  3. Use a small silver clip to secure the loc in place.
  4. Repeat steps 2-5 until you cover your entire head.
  5. Let your locs air dry or use a blow dryer to speed up the drying time.
  6. Gently take off the silver clips.

Tips For Maintaining Locs

  • Shampoo Every Few Weeks: Cleanse your locs with our Hydration Shampoo 1-2 times a month to keep your scalp clean, healthy, and remove all build-up of oil and dirt.
  • Hydrate Your Locs: Your hair still requires moisture even if it is no longer in its loose state so keep your locs hydrated with our Everyday Curl Refresh at least 1-2 a week to keep them from being dry and brittle. After moisturising, apply a few drops of our Hair & Scalp Oil to seal the moisture in and keep your locs shiny.
  • Protect Your Locs: To keep your locs from getting frizzy, rough, and potentially even breaking off, you need to cover them with a satin bonnet before going to bed.

If you're a fan of small or thin locs, microlocs and sisterlocks are both wonderful choices. But, now that you know the difference between the two, you can choose the perfect one for your hair type and desired look. Whichever of the two locs styles you choose, the most important thing is to keep up with retwisting them with our Twist Braid Gel to keep them neat and firm.
