Get The Perfect Twist Out On Natural Hair In 8 Easy Steps

@tiana.my

A twist out is a classic hairstyle everyone with natural hair needs in their routine. Bouncy curls, volume,  and definition–this style really has it all. However, unless you know what you’re doing, it doesn't always turn out right. In this article, we’ll reveal our expert tips for getting a flawless twist out. Ready to create the perfect juicy twist-out? Let's dive in.

1.  Start With A Good Cleanse

\Clean hair is essential for achieving a good twist out, so start by shampooing with our Hydration Shampoo, which cleanses without stripping your hair. Then follow up with our Moisture Rich Conditioner to help smooth your cuticles and make it easier to detangle your hair. Apply the conditioner evenly and gently detangle your hair in sections from ends to roots before rinsing thoroughly.

2.  Deep Condition And Detangle Thoroughly

To infuse your hair with an extra boost of moisture and soften your strands, deep condition with our Manuka Honey Deep Conditioning Mask for 15-20 minutes before rinsing.

3.  Section And Hydrate Your Curls

Once you're out of the shower, dry your hair with a microfiber towel and divide it into 4-6 sections. Then apply a generous amount of Sofnfree's Manuka Honey Leave-in Conditioner to hydrate your curls. Apply the leave-in evenly from roots to ends and finger detangle to remove any knots or tangles.

4.  Twist With Some Gel

Working one section at a time, divide each large section into smaller sub-sections of 4-6 sections. Then apply a little of our Curl Elongating Gel to each section before twisting the hair from root to tip. Twist each section until the entire head is done. If you have loose curls, create medium-sized to larger twists, but if your hair is type 4, make your twists smaller.

Additionally, while twisting, you may need to rehydrate your hair with our Everyday Curl Refresh Spray if the hair dries up while you work. Moisture is important for achieving defined curls, so be sure to spray your hair when necessary.

5.  Dry Your Twist And Unravel

After twisting, avoid touching your hair again until it is fully dry. You can air-dry or use a diffuser to make things faster. However, if you opt for air drying, it will take a day or two for your twists to dry completely.

Once the twists are dry, apply some of our Hair & Scalp Oil to your fingers, then gently unravel each twist.

6.  Fluff Your Curls

After unravelling your twist out, it is important to Fluff out your curls for more volume. Use your fingers or a comb to gently rake through your roots, but avoid overdoing it, as too much fluffing can easily mess up your curls.

7.  Stretch The Twist Out

If you're not a fan of shrunken twists, stretch your curls by diffusing or blow-drying them for a few minutes. To do this, pull small sections of your hair tautly and blow-dry to stretch it out. If you don't want to use heat, you can also use the banding method to stretch your twist out by wrapping your hair in hair ties from root to ends and leaving them overnight. By morning, your curls will naturally be more elongated.

8.  Finish With Some Oil

To seal moisture into your hair and ensure your twist out remains shiny and defined for longer, finish with a few drops of our Hair & Scalp Oil. Then apply a dollop of our Twist & Braid Gel on your edges to keep them neat and sleek.

Mastering twist-outs can be a little tricky, but if you follow the steps we’ve outlined, you will end up with beautiful, bouncy curls that are hydrated and perfectly defined. If you don’t get it right the first time,  try a few more times. The key to getting the results you want is patience and quality styling products like the ones in our My Curls My Way Bundle.
