8 Ways To Change Up Your Curly Hair Routine In The Spring

Spring is a whimsical time of the year with many changes in the weather, but it is also a wonderful time to refresh your hair care routine with a few updates. That's right, winter isn't the only time of the year that deserves its own hair routine. As the temperature starts to warm up, your curls may be exposed to a whole new set of hair challenges. This is why switching up your hair routine to address those spring-related issues is important.

Don't worry, you do not have to do a complete overhaul of your routine. All you need are a few tweaks here and there. Not sure what to change? We got you covered. In this article, we'll be discussing a few ways you can switch up your springtime hair care routine for healthy curls.

How To Change Up Your Curly Hair Routine In The Spring:

1. Start The Season With a Trim:

One of the best ways to give your hair a reset in the spring is to get a trim. Get rid of all the split ends and single strands knots that may be weighing down your curls. This is very important because as your hair becomes extra frizzy due to humidity, any breakage left unattended will only become worse and spread further up the hair shaft. So, wash and condition the hair with Sofnfree's Hydration Shampoo With Manuka Honey and Moisturise-rich Conditioner, and then proceed to snip your ends.

If you are wary of losing the length you worked hard to retain in the winter, don't worry you only have to cut off about half an inch of hair. You can even visit a hairstylist to get a more professional and even cut.

2. Air Dry Your Curls:

Spring is the perfect time to give your hair a break from heat styling. As we all already know, excess use of heat can cause serious damage to your curls. so, if you normally reach for a blow dryer, diffuser, or flat iron on a regular. Try to avoid them and let your hair air dry instead. Since the weather is slightly warmer, you'll notice it does not take too long for your hair to dry. Plus, you may even notice a difference in the outcome of your hairstyles.

The key to fast drying time is styling on damp hair instead of soaking wet hair. Whether you are doing wash n’ gos or twist outs, make sure your curls are not fully wet. All you need to do is moisturise with our Manuka Honey Leave-in Conditioner and spritz the hair with a tiny bit of water.

3. Finish Off Your Wash Days With a Cold Rinse:

Doing a final rinse with cold water on your wash days can be very helpful in fighting frizz during the spring. The cold water will help close your cuticles and prevent your hair from absorbing excess moisture that could ruin your hairstyles. Try to make this your very last step to allow all your other products properly penetrate the hair before your cuticles are sealed. This is especially important if you have low porosity hair.

4. Opt For Lightweight Styling Products:

As the weather gets warmer in the spring, your hair can start to acquire a little more buildup, especially when you sweat. So, instead of weighing your curls down with super heavy and thick products, use lightweight stylers like our Curl Elongating Gel and Flaxseed Oil Curling Mousse. With these weightless formulas, you get to keep your hair looking as flawless as ever with defined curls, hydration, and shine while avoiding a ton of product buildup. If you want to maintain flawless curls from day 1 until your next day, these lightweight products are also the best for refreshing your curls since they won't feel too heavy.

5. Use Humectant-Rich Conditioners:

If you have very dry and brittle hair, including humectants in your hair routine will let you take advantage of the humid spring weather. Humectants are substances that pull moisture from the environment into your hair so they can really help infuse your hair with an extra boost of moisture. Opt for humectant-rich conditioners like our Manuka Honey leave-in Conditioner and Manuka Honey & Avocado oil deep Conditioning Mask. Both formulas will smooth your hair while helping it retain moisture for soft gorgeous curls. Additionally, you can also use our glycerine-rich Coconut & Jamaican Black Castor Oil Curling Creme to enhance and define your curls while boosting hydration.

6. Give Your Scalp Extra Love:

Your scalp often goes through a rough time in the winter with the harsh cold weather leaving it dry, itchy, and sometimes even super flaky. Come springtime, you can rejuvenate your scalp by applying an intensely nourishing hair oil like our Strengthening Oil. Try to apply the oil around three times a week to hydrate the scalp and keep it healthy while strengthening your follicles. If you want to take things up a notch, throw in a ten-minute scalp massage after applying the oil. Not only is it deeply relaxing, but it will also help stimulate blood flow to the scalp.

7. Tame Frizz With Satin Or Silk:

Increased humidity and heat in the spring leave your hair prone to frizz. However, making sure your hair is protected with a silk or satin bonnet will help you say goodbye to frizzy curls. Put your hair in a pineapple before bed and cover the hair with your bonnet. On very humid days, you can even tie a silk scarf around your hair when you go out to help minimise the frizz. This will also protect your curls from UV damage. Yes, even your hair can be damaged by prolonged exposure to the sun. So, style your hair with a silk head wrap to combat frizz and enjoy sun protection.

8. Try New Hairstyles:

If you are a protective style girlie who never wears their hair out due to fear of drying out your curls, switch things up in the spring by rocking your hair in its natural open state. Wash n’ gos, twists outs, Bantu knots outs, and perm rods curls should really be on your to-do list this time of the year. Your hair can literally not get super dry because of all the humidity in the air so feel free to get creative.
