How To Give Curly Hair Volume

How To Give Curly Hair Volume

@michixo__

Struggling to achieve the big voluminous curls of your dream? We get it. Sometimes it can feel like your hair Is cursed to remain flat and lacklustre despite your best efforts. Lucky for you we are here to change that.

In this article, we'll be revealing our expert tips for achieving volume on curly hair. Read ahead to discover our top tricks for getting long-lasting volume.

Cleanse Your Hair

Starting on clean hair is one of the best ways to achieve volume on your curly hair. If your hair is weighed down by dirt and oil, it will look flat and dull no matter how well you style it. So it is best to shampoo your hair with our Manuka Honey Shampoo first and follow up with the Moisture Rich Conditioner before styling your hair. After cleansing your hair, it is also important to make sure it is properly hydrated with a nourishing moisturiser like our Manuka Honey Leave-in Conditioner or Everyday Curl Refresh before using the products in our Stylers Bundle.

Use A Mousse

Using a hair mousse while styling your hair can help improve its volume because mousse leaves the hair with a lightly sculpted definition and a bouncy appearance. However, it is important to avoid using an alcohol-based mousse that can dry out your curls and make them extremely brittle. Instead, use an alcohol-free mousse like our Flaxseed Oil & Rosewater Curling Mousse which flawlessly defines your curls while giving it some much-needed volume and shine.

Separate And Style Your Hair In Sections

Styling your curly hair in as many sections as possible is a great way to encourage outward volume as it keeps the hair from being compressed in one position. The same rule applies once your hair is dry and ready to be fluffed, work in small sections to allow you to properly separate more curl clumps and create a fuller look.

Clip Your Hair At The Roots

Clipping your hair at the root with a hair clip is an amazing way to encourage root volume on curly hair as it delivers long-lasting volume without affecting the curl definition on the rest of the hair. The clips can be placed only on the front section of the hair or the entire head but they need to be gently placed after styling, while the hair is still wet. Once the hair is dry, remove the clips and shake your hair to encourage more movement.

Diffuse Instead Of Air Drying

Air-drying curly hair often results in a lot of shrinkage especially if you have tight curls. So if you want a more voluminous look, diffuse your hair after styling and avoid touching it until it is fully dry. Additionally, you can encourage more volume by using either the pixie diffusing or the pick diffusing method.

Pick diffusing involves using a comb to “pick” or lift the hair at the root while hovering the diffuser on the hair and it is a great option for those with fine hair as it helps to add volume to the roots for a fuller look. Meanwhile, pixie diffusing requires the hair to be scooped into the diffuser cup to dry the curls in a compressed position and help to create more definition and outward volume. Pixie diffusing is great for those who want volume but don't want to compromise on definition. Both diffusing techniques will produce great results, but you need to use nourishing styling products like the ones in our Stylers Bundle to ensure your hair remains smooth and defined after drying.

Flip Your Head Side To Side While Drying

Moving your hair from side to side while it is drying prevents it from being stuck or dried up in one position, encouraging more bounce and volume.

Fluff Your Curls After Drying

Fluffing is one of the best ways to increase the volume of your curls after styling as it breaks up any cast created by your styling products and gives the hair more body and bounce. However, it is very crucial to avoid overdoing it as you could easily mess up your curl definition in the process. Once the hair is dry, just apply a few drops of our Hair & Scalp Oil on your fingers and gently separate your curls. For more volume, feel free to lightly pick at the roots of your hair with a comb to create a more lifted look.

Put Your Hair In A Pineapple At Night

Curly hair tends to get bigger and more voluminous as the days go by. So even if your hair is not as full as you'd like on day 1, just put it up in a pineapple updo before going to bed and cover it with a bonnet or scarf. This will keep it from being flattened while you sleep and also encourage outward volume. By day 2 or 3, you will notice your hair will start to appear fuller.

Whether you have fine or thick curls, with the right styling techniques you can achieve a perfect voluminous look. Just make sure your hair is thoroughly clean and moisturised with our Wash Day Slay Bundle before styling with the Stylers Bundle if you want the best results.
