Summer Hair Care Tips to Keep Your Curly Hair Healthy in The Heat

@elandoalemu

If there is one thing we can all agree on, it’s that summer is the time to let go and relax. Beaches, sunshine, cookouts, vacations, there is just so much to enjoy this season. However, while you kick back and relax, it is important to make sure your hair flourishes along with you.

See summers are not as harsh as winters but they still come with a few changes that can make your hair frizzy, dry, and sweat-ridden. This is why having a haircare routine to match the hot weather is important. In this article, we'll be revealing our top summer hair care tips to keep your curls as luscious and healthy as ever.

1.  Protect Your Curls From The Sun

By now we're sure you already know that the sun can have very damaging effects on the skin. But did you know that it can also have a similar effect on your hair and scalp? That's right, the ultraviolet rays from the sun can cause a sunburn on your scalp and also weaken your hair from the inside. So it is extremely important to protect your hair from the sun. You can do this by applying some sunscreen to your scalp or wearing hats, caps, and headwraps.

2.  Give Your Scalp Extra Attention

Scalp care is very important in the summer as sweat and exposure to chlorine can leave your scalp feeling super dry and even itchy. To combat this, be sure to spray a little bit of water on your scalp and then apply some of our Strengthening Oil at least once a week.

3.  Cleanse Regularly

It is very easy for your hair to accumulate a lot of buildup and sweat when the weather is hot. You may even expose your hair to more pollutants since most people go outdoors more during the summer. So, it is important to cleanse your hair regularly to eliminate all the buildup.

You can use our Hydration Shampoo every week or twice a month to cleanse your hair without stripping it of moisture. However, try to use a clarifying shampoo at least once every two months to fully remove all traces of dirt and pollution from your strands.

4.  Hydrate Your Curls With Conditioners

The combined effects of the sun, pollution, and possible chlorine or saltwater exposure can leave your hair feeling super brittle and dry. If you don't keep it in check, it can easily result in breakage. This is why it is crucial to step up your conditioning efforts. Use our Moisture Rich Conditioner to smooth down your cuticles and hydrate your hair.

If you want to give your hair an extra boost of nourishment, deep condition 1-2 times a month with our Manuka Honey Deep Conditioning Hair Mask. It is a lush formula that will make your hair soft and manageable while improving elasticity and strength.

5.  Limit Heat Styling

Summer is the perfect time to rock your hair in its natural texture. Whether you have curls or coils, take a break from the heat styling tools and let your hair flourish in its true form. This will limit the possibility of any damage and restore your hair's health. You can still use a blow dryer or diffuser when needed but try to put a pause on flat irons.

6.  Keep Chlorine And Saltwater In Check

We all love to take a swim to cool down in the summer but the chlorine and salt in pools and beaches can wreak havoc on your hair if left unchecked. They can leave your curls feeling dry, brittle, and prone to frizz. So protecting your hair before and after swimming is important.

Drench your hair with regular water and a little bit of our Manuka Honey Leave-in Conditioner before swimming to limit the amount of chlorine and salt your hair absorbs. You can also apply a few drops of our Hair & Scalp Oil before swimming to create a protective barrier around your strands. After swimming, be sure to rinse your hair with water and apply more Leave-in Conditioner.

If you want to protect your hair completely from chlorine and salt exposure, then wear a swim cap. This will ensure your hair does not soak up drying chemicals and also help you preserve your hairstyles.

7.  Check Your Ends

Summer is the perfect time to give your hair a healthy reset. Since your hair will likely be worn out more frequently, it is important to make sure your ends are in good shape. Check your ends for split ends or fairy knots and trim off the parts that need to go. It is better to let go of those unhealthy ends now than let them follow you all the way to fall and winter.

8.  Use Lightweight Styling Products

Using heavy products that weigh your hair down in the summer is not a good idea as you can easily sweat and end up with greasy buildup. Instead, opt for lightweight stylers like our Flaxseed Oil & Rosewater Curl Elongating Gel and our Curling Mousse. If a curling creme is a key part of your routine, go for our Coconut Oil & Jamaican Black Castor Oil Curling Creme to define your curls without leaving them with buildup.

9.  Detangle With Care

Summer is often when your hair experiences the most manipulation as you will likely be trying out different hairstyles. This can leave your strands feeling a little weak and overworked so it Is important to be gentle when detangling. Do not rush. be patient and take your time to detangle from the ends to the roots. If you have type 4 hair, you may even need to divide your hair into sections to properly detangle without causing any breakage.

10.              Try Heat-Proof Hairstyles

To save yourself the hassle of trying to keep cool and prevent sweating while wearing your hair down, opt for hairstyles that keep your hair out of the way. This is the time to switch up your routine and wear more updos, ponytails, buns, and even cornrows.

Summer is undoubtedly a time to have fun and live your best life but making sure your hair stays healthy and protected from the elements is equally important. Be sure to incorporate some of the tips we've discussed into your hair routine this summer. You do not need to change your entire routine. All you need are a few tweaks and your curls will flourish all through the heat.
